Bastille Day Cruise

Cruise to Boulogne to celebrate Bastille Day on 14th July

: 6 or 7 days depending on boats and conditions

Organiser: Bill Callaghan

Overall Plan

To sail in stages from the Solent to Boulogne, to arrive in time for the Festival of the Sea and Bastille Day celebrations and fireworks. To depart on 15 July returning home on 16 or 17 July. A more precise passage plan will depend on the boats participating, strength of the crews and the weather.

11 July
Low Water Portsmouth is 07 15 BST Low Water Dover is 0845 BST. This should give up to 7 hours of East Going tide.  Eastbourne is possible in a day’s sail (75 NM), Brighton  is 45NM.

12 July
Low Water Dover is 09 19. Eastbourne to Boulogne is 54 NM, Brighton to Eastbourne is 73 NM.  These distances take account of TSS. Arrive Boulogne Port de Plaisance. There are no tidal restrictions.

13- 14 July
At rest in Boulogne.  Cruise Dinner on 13 July. Visit Festival of the Sea, Visit historic Old Town, Fireworks on the Beach at dusk on 14 July

15 July
Low Water Dover 11 06 BST, High Water Dover  03 41 and 16 11. Depart for home. Boats to make their own way home. The options are to return via Eastbourne or Dover  or travel SW down the French coast. Dieppe is 53 NM from Boulogne and the tides are favourable from about 07 30 BST. The choice could depend on the wind. A strong SW wind would rule out the Dieppe option.

16 July
High Water Dover is 04 32 and 1706. Return from Dieppe or Eastbourne/ Brighton . Dieppe to Portsmouth is 105 NM.

17 July
High Water Dover is 05 36  Return home for those boats breaking the journey into three stages.
